A VPS gives you everything: root access, a fixed IP, the ability to install Node.js and Docker, and full control over your n8n configuration. Shared hosting does not work for n8n because shared plans do not allow custom processes or persistent background services.

You then point a subdomain to your server IP, set up an Nginx reverse proxy to handle HTTPS, and n8n is accessible from the browser. The whole setup takes under an hour on a fresh server.

If you want n8n to start automatically after a server reboot, you configure it as a Docker Compose service with a restart policy. That way it comes back up on its own without manual intervention.

Connecting n8n to Your Other Tools

Once n8n is running, you can connect it to almost anything. Gmail, Google Sheets, Telegram bots, WooCommerce, WhatsApp via Twilio, payment webhooks, custom REST APIs. n8n has over 400 built-in integrations and you can call any HTTP endpoint directly.
